    We decided to try The Tollgate for Sunday lunch after we had been told by some people we know that the carvery was good. Upon arrival in the bar which is very pleasant, we were promptly served by attentive bar staff. This Coventry gastro pub only offers 1 real ale, Green King IPA at the time of our visit, very reasonably priced. The rest of the bar prices are also very reasonable. After enjoying a drink we made our way to the large dinning room where the carvery is and the place was very busy illustrating the popularity of the pub and the food that it offers. The routine is that you pay in advance for your meal at the bar, the staff give you a ticket which you then present to the carving staff at the carvery. So we made our way to the carvery in anticipation of a nice Sunday roast. I immediately noticed that the carvers were being very meagre with the meat of which there was a choice of 3 joints - beef, turkey and gammon. The carvers would actually be able to teach plastic surgeons a thing or two about how to thinly slice bio matter and tissue for skin graft. We had small thin slices of meat placed on a plate with a factory mass - produced Yorkshire pudding and a dry hard ball of stuffing. We then self-served at the vegetable counter and the vegetables were cooked to a good standard. My overriding memory of this Sunday lunch will be the ability of the carvers to shave meat from the joints rather than carve the meat. We won't be dining at The Tollgate again, but this is a very popular place to dine out so our opinion is clearly not shared by many who seem to enjoy the fare that is offered. This Sunday carvery in Coventry is pretty cheap and is served from 11.15am to 9pm. Midweek carvery prices are cheaper and the opening times are similar.
