Tips for Buying a Used Car

When buying  used cars in Coventry, a buyer needs to be vigilant as it is quite easy to be fooled by the appearance of the car and not what is under the bonnet. During a recent survey of car sales in Coventry there were many occurrences of misrepresentation, some are under investigation by Trading Standards. Buyer beware!! Cars for sale in Coventry are no different from any other part of the country. There are many potential pitfalls that need to be explored. Whilst used car sales in Coventry can be competitively priced, a buyer needs to be vigilant. Below are a few handy tips:Two major concerns would be if the vehicle had been involved in a major collision and if the car was a `ringer`. The first being self explanatory. In the context of the second, a `ringer` is a term used for a car that is illegal, either stolen or a car with outstanding finance or where the identity of the car has been changed to match that of another, legitimate, identical model. It is always prudent to obtain a car history check from a reputable firm. Request to see the log book (this is also known as the V5C and if it is the original document will be watermarked by the DVLA). As a final check, the vehicle identification number (VIN), this can be found stamped on the car`s chassis either under or near the front seat and also can be found on a small plate under the bonnet, in some instances it can also be found on the window pillar and the registration number should match those on the log book.It is obviously slightly more difficult to know whether the vehicle has been involved in a major collision, but take your time to give the vehicle a proper inspection. Check for obvious signs of damage, good indicators are: different coloured paintwork and panels, check equal gaps around doors, wings etc., check for any signs of extra welds, look down the sides of the vehicle with doors closed, to check alignment of wheels with bodywork and bodywork appears true, including vehicle roof, i.e., no obvious ripples or dents, check under bonnet, in boot and under carpets for obvious signs of remedial work, check tyres for abnormal wear, indicating tracking problems, which could be associated with accident damage, peel back rubber seals around windows and doors to check for signs of overspray, or colour change. Another area of concern when considering used car sales in Coventry is what is commonly known as a `cut and shut` whereby two or more different cars have been welded together to make one `whole` car. Clearly, this practice would mean the integrity of the welded together structure would be highly unsafe and could, if involved in even a small collision, cause some serious injury to the occupants of the vehicle. Again, look out for similar signs to those of a major collision involvement as above, such as: overspray on glass seals and trim, below standard paintwork, check by pulling back carpets for hidden welds, similarly check alignment of the window pillars (and check for hidden welds. Once again, be advised that when buying a used car, you should obtain a full history check via HPI or a similar service. Finally, remember that the majority of used cars for sale in Coventry will be absolutely fine.
