Do you have memories of Ullathorne Air Cadets?

Air Cadet Squadron is fifty and still flying high
The 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne)Squadron Air Training Corps which was formed from a flight detached of 8F Squadron that was established at Bishop Ullathorne School in January 1961 under the command of Flt Lt Martin Turner.
In towns not large enough to sustain a squadron of 30 cadets, or as a supplement to an existing squadron in a larger town or city, a Detached Flight (DF) is formed. This operates much like any other unit, but is technically a component part of a nearby larger squadron.
As more cadets joined the detached flight it soon became a squadron in its own right and 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron grew from strength to strength.
The Air Training Corps also know as the air cadets is a youth organisation support by the Royal Air Forces. They offer opportunities such as flying, gliding, target shooting, Duke of Edinburgh's award, adventure training and many more activities.
The air cadets have some official aims that were set out by King George VI back in 1941 when the organisation was started.
• To promote and encourage among young people a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force.
• To provide training which will be useful in the Services and civilian life.
• To foster the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship.
What all that means is that the Air Cadet Organisation provides opportunities for teenagers to get airborne, meet new people, learn new skills, develop in character and ability and have fun doing it.
The Squadron, based inside the grounds of Bishop Ullathorne School on Leasowes Avenue has experienced an eventful 50 years, with many cadets coming through the doors and many commanding officers.
To help celebrate this 50th anniversary the cadets are putting together a 50th anniversary book pieced from the information they find out and photographs throughout the years.
Newspaper research is being carried out by the staff at the archive section at The Herbert Art Gallery. Anything they find will be added to the book.
The current staff members know very little history of the squadron they can only piece together the past ten years and as the squadron's 50th anniversary approaches they are searching for former members to come forward and share their memories and photos to help piece together the squadron's history.
The current commanding officer Flt Lt Nathan Adams said "2438 Squadron has reached an impressive milestone of our Golden Anniversary providing youth activities to the young people of Coventry. Former Cadets have benefited from the sense of community and friendship that the Air Training Corps provides, along with key life skills. After 50 years or providing this valuable service to the people of Coventry we would like to remember the hundreds of Cadets and former staff who have been members of 2438 Squadron. Anybody who is a former member of the Squadron is invited to visit the Squadron Headquarters to sign the 50th Anniversary Book.
The 5th February 2011 is the also the Air Training Corps 70th Anniversary so this is a double celebration year for the squadron.
Anyone who has information, newspaper cuttings or photographs that they would like to contribute to the book can contact the squadron by emailing info@2438sqnatc.co.uk or by telephoning 02476 696898 on a parade night. The squadrons current parade nights are Monday and Thursday 1915-2130 hrs.
