City College Coventry

City College Coventry was formed by the merger of the Coventry Technical College and Tile Hill College of Further Education in 2002.

City College Coventry, was officially launched by former Coventry teacher and Secretary of State for Education Estelle Morris who was a teacher at Sidney Stringer School which is a next door neighbour to the new City College Coventry.


The college renamed its two constituent sites to, The Butts Centre (Coventry Technical College) and Tile Hill Centre (Tile Hill College). The Butts site was built in 1935, while the Tile Hill Centre was built in the 1960s.


It was decided by Coventry City Council that the two sites would be closed and sold off and a new college would be built in the Hillfields area of Coventry next to the Swanswell Park. This new college would make a massive contribution to the regeneration of Hillfields, an area with a chequered history of violence, vice and crime. Two high rise blocks of flats and a pub were demolished to make way for the new college. In August 2007 the first phase of the Swanswell site was completed. The college courses from Maxwell and Tile Hill Centres started in phase one in September 2007 and in November 2008 phase two was completed.In January 2009, staff and students from The Butts Centre moved to the new college and the iconic Butts College was closed and still awaits development.

The College is divided up into four faculties;

• Faculty of Creative Studies
• Faculty of Skills & Commercial Development
• Faculty of Technology


Faculty of Business & Society


All of the courses are based in the south building, course areas included in this Faculty are as follows;
• A Levels
• GCSEs
• Accounting
• Business
• Professional Studies e.g. Personnel, Marketing, Credit Management, Law
• Humanities, Access & English
• Public Services
• Science and Maths
• Sport
• Travel and Tourism
• Early Years


Faculty of Creative Studies


The courses in this Faculty are spread across both north and south buildings. These courses have access to excellent facilities and have great links with employers. Course areas in this Faculty include;


• Computing
• Computer Games Development
• Media Production - Television/Radio
• Music Production
• Art and Design
• Photography
• Fashion
• Hair and Beauty
• Performing Arts


Faculty of Skills & Commercial Development


This Faculty has a wide brief and not only delivers courses in both of the college's north and south buildings but also out in the community in the Coventry and Warwickshire area and within local and regional businesses.
Course areas included in this Faculty are;


• English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
• Basic Skills (Literacy and Numeracy)
• Modern Foreign Languages
• Sign Language
• Short IT Courses
• International
• Courses for students with specific learning difficulties
• Health and Social Care
• Foundation


Faulty of Technology


All of the courses in this Faculty are based in the north building in state of the art workshops and classrooms. This Faculty has excellent links with local and regional employers.
Course areas include the following;


• Construction
• Plumbing
• Carpentry
• Electrical Installation
• Brickwork
• Plastering
• Engineering
• Vehicle Engineering
• City College Coventry is located close to the City Centre on the junction of Swanswell Street and Stoney Stanton Road.
