Coventry Theatres
If you are a theatre goer there is more to choice than you may realize in Coventry.
There is always a good variety on offer at Coventry's theatres including drama, comedy, musicals, children's theatre, dance, opera, jazz, military bands, big band music, pop music and classical music.

Of course the one time of year when most people want to go to the theatre is Christmas for pantomimes in Coventry. There are several theatres in Coventry which put on pantomimes every Christmas.

This theatre is in Coventry city centre and has two stages. It was opened in 1958 and was built using wood donated by one of Coventry's twined cities Belgrade the capital of Serbia, which at that time was the capital of Yugoslavia. This is why the theatre is called the Belgrade Theatre and its opening was a symbol of the post war recovery of Coventry after the terrible destruction that the city suffered during World War II.

The Belgrade was extended and improved in 2007 along with the area around the theatre which is now called Belgrade Plaza. Sometimes in the summer there are open air performances in the Plaza, most notably during the Godiva Festival.
The main auditorium has 850 seats and the wonderful, intimate B2 stage has 250 seats. The B2 is designed in such a way that the audience are very close to the players and it offers a unique experience. The main stage is very comfortable and a traditional theatre.

There are many restaurants near the Belgrade Theatre and gastro pubs near the Belgrade Theatre offering plenty of choice for theatre goers looking to eat out in Coventry. The Belgrade Theatre has its own restaurant which offers excellent dining.

The Belgrade has seen many of the great players of stage and screen over the years and continues to see great actors and musicians treading the boards.

The theatre has put much emphasis on local youth theatre over the years and has produced many top actors who have gone on to enjoy successful careers in showbusiness. The most notable local actor to come from the Belgrade Youth Theatre is Clive Owen, star of stage and screen.

The Belgrade Theatre puts on a huge Varity of shows from musicals to ballet to comedy and drama. The Belgrade pantomime in Coventry is a firm favourite with Coventry people and attracts visitors to Coventry. These visitors take advantage while they are in the city and go Christmas shopping in Coventry.

Contact the Box Office by phone on 024 7655 3055, or in person from Mon - Sat from 10am until the start of the last evening performance; or 6.30pm when there are no evening performances.

Entrance & Courtyard to St Marys Hall

St Mary's Guildhall is one of the finest medieval guildhalls in England, and one of Coventry's most splendid and historic buildings. Situated in Bayley Lane in the heart of Coventry for over 650 years, St. Mary's Guildhall has witnessed events of both local and national importance during its long history.

The Guildhall served as the centre of King Henry VI's court during the Wars of the Roses which effectively made Coventry the Capital City of England and briefly as a prison to Mary, Queen of Scots. William Shakespeare staged plays at Saint Mary's.

It's A.D. 60; the Iceni of East Anglia led by the legendary Boudica have rebelled against Roman rule, and have just been defeated in a terrible battle fought somewhere in the Midlands.

As a result the Romans are building a series of fortifications across the Midlands including the Lunt.

Priory Visitor Centre, Coventry

Priory Visitor Centre, Coventry entrance

"For hundreds of years the ruins of Coventry's first Cathedral lay hidden beneath the City Centre. The 'Phoenix Initiative', Coventry's Millennium project, gave archaeologists the opportunity to excavate this important site. Over several years the remains of many of the medieval buildings were uncovered.

Some of the ruins have been reburied for their protection, but gardens have been designed over them to reflect the archaeology below. The garden built over the site of the cloister includes the Visitor Centre, which not only houses some of the incredible finds from the excavation, but also tells the story of this amazing part of Coventry's history.

The Priory Undercrofts offer a fascinating glimpse into the best preserved remains of Coventry's original Benedictine monastery, dissolved by Henry VIII. Discovered and excavated by the Coventry Archaeological Team as part of the Phoenix Initiative, stone vaulted rooms, a courtyard, doorways and passages are open for visitors to experience by guided tour."

2-Tone Central Mueseum - Venue - Cafe

2-Tone Central Museum, Venue & Cafe,

2-tone central museum Coventry main collection

This is where you will find the 2-tone museum with a huge collection of original items donated or loaned by the original band members of The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat and other musicians, roadies and others who were instrumental in the birth of 2-tone music in Coventry.

2-tone central museum Coventry history exhibit

The venue is where you can see live music at weekends and also weekday gigs. This stage has seen the likes of U2 play here in the 70's and early 80's along with The Tourists and of course The Specials, The Selecter and many other bands who were to become big names around the world.

************IMPORTANT NEWS 2-TONE CENTRAL IS MOVING*******************************

2 Tone Central is moving

The 2 Tone Central museum, venue and cafe are moving from the present location in Coventry city centre and the operation will now be split between sites.

The move is necessary because the current location at Coventry University is being re-developed by the University for rental as office accommodation.

At the moment everything about 2-Tone Central is in the same room but with this enforced move the operation will be fragmented. The museum will re-locate to the Ball Hill area of Coventry, to a relatively unused shopping arcade called the Courtyard. The organisers will have much more room for the museum and so more exhibits can be expected making the visitor experience even more interesting. The intention is to make the Courtyard a 2-Tone village with the museum, a shop, a Caribbean restaurant at night and a 2-Tone cafe by day.

The move will mean that the museum will be open for many more days and hours. At the moment the hours are restricted by the University and staffing problems. The 2-Tone Central is currently open only midweek and is closed for 27 weeks of the year and every bank holiday and weekend. This is not good for a visitor attraction.

Live gigs take place at the West Indian Club in Spon End which is still a good city centre location with plenty of parking at the Sky Dome. There may also be gigs at the new Students Union venue "The Hub".

More details will be published here as they become clear.

Meanwhile a final gig at 2-Tone Central is being planned for the current venue on 13th August.
