University scheme supports talented young athletes

Students like these can benefit from the Scholarship

Coventry University are going to support a record number of promising student athletes in 2010, as its progressive and successful Sport Scholarship Programme confirms its reputation as one of the best in the UK.

The Scholarship, which is worth up to £3000 a year, is available to students who can demonstrate excellence in a sporting activity recognised by the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR), and who are prepared to represent the University at a high level in that sport.

Coventry University students have been getting the benefits of the scheme since 1996, when the University started by supporting five swimmers who had problems in trying to balance their studying with competing for the City of Coventry Swimming Club. Many of those athletes went on to achieve international success, especially Adam Whitehead who won gold medals in both the European Swimming Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Current rising stars of the programme include Phil Peverelle, a former European Kickboxing champion, and International Taekwondo champion Jessica Howells. They are amongst a cluster of student athletes benefiting from financial assistance for competition fees and also for training expenses, physiotherapists, coaches and mentors.

21-year-old Peverelle said: "I've been Kick-boxing on the international scene for a few years now and the University's support, through the Sport Scholarship Programme, has been a great help. It has enabled me to continue competing at the top level while studying, and has also helped with all my training and travel expenses. It's a fantastic initiative."
