Roman Finds on Display at the Herbert

Art Gallery & Museum

The Your Coventry section of the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum's History Gallery has been re-displayed with items found by the volunteers of the Coventry Historic Environment Project.

The exhibition runs until August 2010 and is the result of a partnership between the Archaeology team at Coventry City Council and Coventry and District Archaeological Society, the project is part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The display shows a selection of Mesolithic and Neolithic flints and pottery dating from the Roman period found by members of the public during field walking surveys.  Photos and a DVD showing some of the activities that participants have undertaken as part of the project are also included in the exhibition.

The Lord mayor joined the Coventry Historic Environment Project volunteers for the launch of the new display on Wednesday 24 February.  Paul Thompson, Keeper of Collections at the Herbert and archaeology advisor to CHEP said "This project has given people a chance to be part of history.  Through their participation the volunteers have discovered artefacts that haven't been seen for over 500 years.  It's amazing to see what a community of people from different ages and backgrounds, working together can achieve".

The volunteer community archaeology project aims to give everybody the opportunity to take part in archaeological surveys and to increase awareness and understanding of local history and archaeology.  The project has revealed intense prehistoric activity in the North West rural areas of Coventry, with the recovery of a large selection of Mesolithic and Neolithic flint tools including blades, scrapers, cores and waste flakes, two Roman sites, and a variety of medieval landscape features.  The most recent discovery was a very intriguing earthwork which might be a burial mound or a hillfort.

People interested in further information on the project or volunteering should contact Eloise Markwick, the Project Officer by e-mail: eloise.markwick@coventry.gov.uk or by phone 024 7683 2795.
