An Inland Voyage: Life on the Coventry & Oxford Canals

A new exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum explores Coventry's lost community

An Inland Voyage photography exhibition in Coventry

From 26 June until 30 August, the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum will welcome its new FREE exhibition An Inland Voyage: Life on the Coventry and Oxford Canals displaying a snapshot of local heritage through photography from years gone by.

There was a time when the Coventry and Oxford canal network was much more than just a leisurely stroll on a Sunday afternoon, but instead the home and way of life for an entire community.

An Inland Voyage reveals the remarkable photographic archive of Coventry factory worker, Robert Longden. During the late 1940s and early 1950s he documented an intimate history of a working life now long gone.

The photographs record the narrow boat people he encountered at Sutton Stop canal junction near Hawkesbury. It also includes images of Coventry's now demolished power station. These images catch forever the moment of transformation which saw the canals change from being industrial thoroughfares to locations for leisure.

Robert's great grandson Stephen Pochin has restored the original photographs for an exclusive exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. He says "The restoration of the archive took many painstaking hours of removing thousands of tiny specs, blemishes and scratches from each image. This work produced some uncanny feelings with the realisation that I was staring at images of people long gone who, when photographed, were peering at my ancestor.

"This exhibition is unique in capturing a society which will never exist again. It presents an historical snapshot that at only 60 to 70 years old seems a lot older ".

An inland Voyage: Life on the Coventry and Oxford Canals is suitable for all ages; all children must be accompanied by an adult.
