Coventry has been hit hard in recent years with major employers moving jobs away from the city.
Since the beginning of the decade the following major employers have closed down large factories and sites:
Massey Ferguson Tractors
This firm was purchased by AGCO in 1993 and closed the Coventry production factory in Banner Lane, Tile Hill in 2002, with the loss of 1,000 direct jobs and a similar number in supply jobs. Massey Ferguson employed over 8,000 people in Coventry in the 1970's. The factory has now been demolished and is being developed for commercial and housing use.
Jaguar Cars
Jaguar ceased car production in Coventry in 2005 after more than 70 years with the loss of over 3,000 jobs, direct and indirect. Jaguar still employs around 2,000 people in the city at the Browns Lane wood veneer workshop and at the Whitley research and development centre, which is also the corporate headquarters.
Peugeot Cars
Peugeot closed the huge Ryton assembly plant in 2007 with the loss of 3,500 direct jobs and about 1,000 other supply jobs. The work was moved to the Czech Republic and France. This huge factory has now been demolished and is awaiting development. Peugeot still employs approximately 500 people in Coventry in the spare parts division and at its UK headquarters.
Marconi
Originally GEC, this telecommunications operation was huge in Coventry with 3 factories employing over 8,000 people. After mergers and acquisitions, this operation has gone from GEC to GPT to Marconi and now Telent and Ericsson.
The new century park site is almost empty and Ericsson recently announced it was closing its new research centreat Ansty Park with the loss of 700 high tech jobs.
So that's the bad news is there any room for optimism?
In Coventry there is always room for optimism, throughout its history Coventry has risen from the ashes both in the literal sense and metaphorically.
The major employers now in the city are Coventry City Council, the NHS, the University of Warwick and Coventry University.
There are still many manufacturing jobs in the city and we still make vehicles in Coventry; the TX4 Taxi, the Modec electric van.
There are many companies doing highly skilled precision work for the vehicle manufacturing industry and the aerospace industry.
The service sector now provides many thousands of jobs in Coventry in contact centres, leisure, tourism and retail.
The logistics industry has a large presence in Coventry due the city being in the centre of England, thereby having excellent road links. Nowhere in England is more than 5 hours away by road.
Commerce from other parts of England are being attracted to Coventry because along with the city's excellent road links it is also only 55 minutes by train from Coventry Railway Station to London. Many Coventrians commute to highly paid jobs in London by train every day.
It is much more cost effective to relocate to Coventry from the South of England and London is just an hour away for business and customers. Employees moving up to Coventry find there money goes much further in the Coventry property market , with a one bed flat in London releasing enough equity to buy a 3 bed detached in a nice Coventry suburb.
Even in these challenging times the overwhelming majority of Coventrians are working and there are still jobs in Coventry.
